Role at the time: Mayor of New York City
Response to this claim
Honoring the dead requires opposing continuing war crimes and pursuing freedom, safety and dignity for everyone.
“To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.”
Mamdani mourns victims of Hamas's attack and Palestinians in Gaza, condemns Hamas's actions as war crimes, and criticizes Israel and U.S. arms support.
His conclusion supplies a justification for combining remembrance with criticism of Israel in the same statement.
Role at the time: Mayor of New York City, in a post-speech statement
Statement summary
In a statement after Netanyahu's September 24 United Nations speech, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Netanyahu "used his speech to repeat baseless lies" and said no lie can change that Netanyahu is the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“As he has done time and again, Prime Minister Netanyahu used his speech to repeat baseless lies meant to sanitize his genocide of Palestinians. Yet no lie can change the fact that he remains the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
Reuters reports that in a statement after Netanyahu's United Nations address, Mamdani said the prime minister repeated "baseless lies" and cited the International Criminal Court arrest warrant alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Mamdani directly rejects Netanyahu's description of him and restates his accountability argument, which supports this label within the case's scope.
Role at the time: Mayor of New York City, at a press conference
Statement summary
At a September 22 press conference, Zohran Mamdani rejected Netanyahu’s allegation that he had incited riots against Jewish New Yorkers and cited the ICC warrant and his characterization of Netanyahu’s conduct to defend his accountability campaign. The underlying allegations are recorded as Mamdani’s attributed statements.
“We all know that what the prime minister has said in that video is not true. What we do know to actually be the truth when it comes to the prime minister is that he is the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. As the prime minister, he is the architect of a horrific genocide against Palestinians.”
Politico reported directly attributed comments by Mamdani at a September 22 press conference responding to Netanyahu’s video. The article records Mamdani’s characterizations and references to the ICC warrant; it does not independently establish the underlying allegations he made.
Mamdani does more than reject Netanyahu’s accusation: he affirmatively defends his accountability campaign by citing the ICC warrant and restating his characterization of Netanyahu.
Role at the time: Mayor of New York City, in a video statement posted on X
Statement summary
Mamdani said his administration reviewed the law and found New York City lacks the independent legal authority to execute the ICC's arrest warrant against Netanyahu, and called on the federal government to do so, reiterating that he considers Netanyahu a war criminal.
“It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does, and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant.”
Reports Mamdani's video statement that New York City cannot execute the ICC's arrest warrant for Netanyahu, calling on the federal government to do so instead, reiterating his view that Netanyahu is a war criminal and "not welcome in New York City."
Mamdani defends the substance of his position (that Netanyahu should be arrested) while explaining the legal limit on his own authority, so this defends the campaign against Netanyahu rather than backing away from it.
