Why we used this label

The case tracks support for continued U.S. military operations against Iran, including whether a candidate would vote for a war powers resolution to remove U.S. forces from hostilities. Barrett's office says he has voted for every such resolution since May 1 to end the conflict absent congressional authorization, which opposes continuing the operation without Congress, so we labeled it Condemned. In March he said the president had earned the opportunity to resolve the conflict, a statement recorded separately on this case.

Statement summary

In a Fox News opinion piece, Rep. Tom Barrett wrote that the War Powers Act gives the president up to 60 days before Congress must consent, that when that period expired for the Iran conflict he felt compelled to enforce it, and that the people's representatives must have a say on war even as Iran must never get a nuclear weapon.

“When that timeline expired for the conflict in Iran, I felt compelled to enforce it for one simple reason”

Why we used this label

The case tracks support for continued U.S. military operations against Iran, including whether a candidate would vote for a war powers resolution to remove U.S. forces from hostilities. Barrett writes that he acted to enforce the War Powers Act's 60-day limit once it expired for the Iran conflict, which opposes continuing the operation without congressional consent, so we labeled it Condemned. The closest competing label is Mixed or conditional, because he also writes that Iran must never get a nuclear weapon. We did not use it because he does not tie that goal to continuing the operation.
