Role at the time: Democratic senator from Rhode Island, in remarks quoted by Politico
Response to this claim
Chuck Schumer will be reelected majority leader when Senate Democrats choose their leader for the new Congress.
“Schumer delivering a Democratic Senate certainly justifies another term as leader”
Politico report published the day before the election, saying senators and aides expected Schumer to return as leader if Democrats won the majority. It quotes Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and other Democratic senators on his standing, and says the leadership election will be held by secret ballot in early December.
The reference point is Chuck Schumer remaining Senate Democratic leader in the new Congress. Whitehouse says a Democratic majority justifies another term for Schumer, which supports his continuing as leader.
