Role at the time: Ranking member of the House Oversight Committee
Statement summary
Garcia welcomes the reported DOJ investigation and says congressional scrutiny of Lewandowski will continue. He pledges to use oversight tools to obtain answers. His reference to corruption is an allegation and political assessment, rather than a finding of criminal liability.
“We welcome the DOJ's investigation but our work continues.”
The release describes a reported criminal investigation and continuing congressional work. It does not establish guilt.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)He criticizes alleged corruption and calls for accountability through continued investigation.
Role at the time: Ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (D-Calif.)
Statement summary
Robert Garcia, ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said in a statement announcing an investigation that the Pentagon "appears to be lying about the casualties of fallen soldiers to continue justifying Donald Trump's war of choice with Iran." He said the American people "deserve the truth about every life lost and soldier wounded in this illegal war."
“The Pentagon appears to be lying about the casualties of fallen soldiers to continue justifying Donald Trump's war of choice with Iran, ... The American people deserve the truth about every life lost and soldier wounded in this illegal war.”
Military Times report, dated August 4, 2026, on a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth from House Oversight Democrats that Military Times says it received exclusively. It says the Defense Department declined to comment on the letter.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The reference point is the Pentagon's public accounting of U.S. deaths in the Iran war, here the July removal of four soldiers from the Operation Epic Fury count before they reappeared under a new category. Garcia says the Pentagon appears to be lying about the casualties of fallen soldiers and that the public deserves the truth about every life lost. That is an express criticism of the accounting, which fits Condemned. The closest competing label is Challenged the characterization, but Garcia goes beyond disputing a description by saying the Pentagon appears to be lying about the casualties.
Role at the time: U.S. representative and ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform
Statement summary
Garcia signed a letter stating that Martinez's death should never have happened and that public evidence challenged DHS's account of the shooting.
“Mr. Martinez's death is a tragedy that should never have happened.”
Reps. Greg Casar and Robert Garcia's March 24, 2026 letter to DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari, requesting an investigation into the Martinez shooting and alleging DHS concealed and misrepresented the circumstances of the shooting for nearly a year.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The joint letter said Martinez's death should never have happened and disputed DHS's account, directly condemning the shooting.
Role at the time: Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, in a release from House Oversight Democrats
Response to this claim
It appears that while Jared Kushner is representing the U.S. government in negotiations in the Middle East, he is simultaneously seeking to raise at least $5 billion in additional foreign capital for Affinity Partners, which Rep. Robert Garcia and Sen. Ron Wyden say raises the potential for conflicts of interest that could threaten national security.
“Jared Kushner raising billions from Middle Eastern governments for his private equity firm, pocketing tens of millions in fees each year, while serving as Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy raises serious concerns about his potential conflicts of interest. We need answers if Trump’s son-in-law is profiting by selling access to influence U.S. policy to foreign investors. If he’s getting influenced by cash from other countries, America’s national security is at risk.”
The House Oversight Democrats' release announcing the two letters of March 19, 2026. It carries one quotation each from Rep. Robert Garcia and Sen. Ron Wyden and describes earlier Oversight Democrat inquiries into Kushner.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The reference point is the proposition that Kushner's private business through Affinity, including its Israeli investments and Gulf capital, creates a conflict of interest with his role in U.S. Middle East negotiations. Garcia says the fundraising "raises serious concerns about his potential conflicts of interest" and calls for answers, which criticizes the arrangement, so we used Condemned. The closest competing label is Mixed or conditional, because two sentences are phrased as conditions, one about whether the president's son-in-law is profiting and one about whether he is influenced by cash from other countries. It loses because those conditions concern whether profit or influence occurred, while the first sentence itself criticizes the overlap of the fundraising and the envoy role.

Role at the time: Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee, in a press release
Response to this claim
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform said in House Report 119-831 that Leon Black willfully failed to comply with its June 26, 2026 deposition subpoena and document subpoena, and that his stated reasons for not complying are without merit.
“This vote is an important step towards justice and accountability. Leon Black has continued to defy two congressional subpoenas and we need to know why he gave Jeffrey Epstein $180 million dollars.”
Ranking Member Garcia's press release after the House agreed to the contempt resolution.
Relative to the decision to hold Black in contempt, Garcia calls it an important step and says Black continued to defy two subpoenas. He supports the action itself, so the label is a defense rather than a challenge to how it is characterized.
