Statement summary
Explaining her first vote to curb Trump's Iran war powers, Miller-Meeks, a 24-year Army veteran, said she will not vote to keep soldiers in an open-ended war, declared Iran's nuclear ambitions 'defanged,' and demanded the president present Congress a plan to end the conflict.
“I served 24 years in the Army. I said it in March: the mission had to stay focused and limited, because Americans do not want another forever war. I will not vote to keep our soldiers in an open-ended war, with Iowans paying too much at the pump. The Iranian regime and its nuclear ambitions have been defanged. The president needs to present a plan to Congress and the American people for how this ends so we can focus on bringing our soldiers home and lowering prices.”
Des Moines Register report on Iowa Reps. Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks voting for H.Con.Res. 93 on September 15, 2026 after five previous votes against, with their full statements and statements from Ashley Hinson and Democratic challengers.
Votes to end the war and refuses open-ended continuation, but frames it as mission accomplished ('defanged') rather than opposition to the war itself, a conditional break after five votes to continue it.
