Statement summary

Kenyatta and three Pennsylvania House colleagues say they will seek a statewide ban on automated license-plate readers, except turnpike cameras used solely for toll collection.

“For these reasons, we plan on introducing legislation that would ban the use of ALPRs in Pennsylvania. This would fully prohibit new ALPR systems from being implemented in the Commonwealth and remove existing ALPRs, with the exception of turnpike cameras, which are used solely for toll collection purposes.”

Why we used this label

Kenyatta supports prohibiting existing and new automated license-plate-reader systems in Pennsylvania, with a toll-camera exception. The reference point is whether networked license-plate-reader systems should exist. The memo argues that the systems create a searchable record of vehicles' movements and should be removed to protect privacy. This is a direct call to prohibit the network, so the classification is condemns.
