Statement summary
John Cornyn signed a letter urging nationwide NFA non-enforcement to avoid unequal treatment and requesting that DOJ decline an appeal and begin rulemaking.
“Action: Signed an August 11 letter urging DOJ to apply the NFA ruling nationwide, decline an appeal and begin rulemaking.”
The letter asks DOJ to decline an appeal and apply the ruling nationwide before formal rulemaking. It recognizes the injunction's narrower coverage.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The reference is nationwide NFA non-enforcement. Signing a letter expressly requesting that policy supports it, even though the letter predates ATF's October announcement.
Role at the time: U.S. senator from Texas
Statement summary
Sen. John Cornyn said he thinks "they should be investigating," but that it is not unheard of for people to use their vehicle as a weapon and that ICE agents are entitled to defend themselves.
“I think they should be investigating. But it’s not unheard of that people will use their vehicle as a weapon. And the ICE agents are entitled to defend themselves”
Texas Tribune report, published July 15, 2026, on Texas Republican officials' first public remarks about the July 7 ICE shooting in Houston, including remarks by Sen. John Cornyn on Tuesday, July 14.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)The case asks whether the ICE officer was justified in fatally shooting Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Cornyn said he thinks "they should be investigating," then said it is not unheard of for people to use their vehicle as a weapon and that ICE agents are entitled to defend themselves. He did not say whether this shooting was justified, but the self-defense argument matches the explanation ICE gave, and the remark about an investigation does not withdraw it, so we labeled it Defended or excused.

Statement summary
Sen. John Cornyn said the criticism of Flock cameras had moved too quickly and asked the FBI director to explain how the technology helps investigations.
“There seems to also be a recent rush to judgment when it has come to automated license plate readers, or so-called Flock cameras.”
Full hearing recording includes Cornyn's question about public criticism of license-plate readers and Patel's response defending case-by-case FBI use.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)Cornyn disputes the broad negative framing without expressly calling for unrestricted deployment.
