Role at the time: U.S. representative from Texas
Statement summary
Castro says losing an election is not grounds for asylum, says the Trump administration is giving Flávio Bolsonaro safe haven, and says it owes Congress answers on its role in helping him flee Brazil in contravention of Brazilian law.
“Losing an election is not grounds for asylum. Yet the Trump Administration is giving Flávio Bolsonaro safe haven in the United States.”
Castro objects to what he calls U.S. safe haven for Bolsonaro and demands answers from the administration. His asylum framing and his allegation of U.S. assistance with the departure are his assertions; this post does not establish an asylum grant or U.S. operational involvement.
The conduct under scrutiny is Bolsonaro leaving Brazil and being welcomed by the United States. Castro condemns what he calls U.S. safe haven and challenges the administration's involvement.
Role at the time: U.S. representative and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere
Statement summary
Rep. Joaquin Castro said the administration's boat strike campaign "has violated U.S. laws, failed to meaningfully stop drug trafficking, and legally imperiled U.S. servicemembers ordered to conduct these strikes".
“His administration’s illegal and ineffective campaign of boat strikes in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific has violated U.S. laws, failed to meaningfully stop drug trafficking, and legally imperiled U.S. servicemembers ordered to conduct these strikes.”
Rep. Castro's statement on the first anniversary of the campaign's first strike. He is Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere.
Measured against the campaign the September 19 strike belongs to, Castro calls the campaign illegal and ineffective and says he will work for accountability, which is an express condemnation.
