Statement summary
Jasmine Crockett, responding to press scrutiny of her support for James Talarico, told her followers to point journalists to her March 4 post congratulating him on becoming the Democratic Senate nominee and calling on Democrats to rally around their nominees. She also said reporters should write about Ken Paxton and asked whether critics knew the other races on the Harris County ballot.
“Y'all are corny! I keep receipts. ... For the lazy journalists that you see, point them here”
Crockett's verified account quote-posts her March 4 post-primary congratulation and call for unity. The post supports her rebuttal of criticism.
The case asks whether Crockett should campaign for Talarico rather than focus on down-ballot races. Responding to press scrutiny of her support for him, Crockett told readers to point journalists to her March 4 post, which urged Democrats to rally around their nominees and said she would keep working to elect Democrats up and down the ballot. We record this as Challenged the characterization because she disputes the premise that she has withheld support, without saying whether she will appear with him. Defended or excused is the closest competing label; it loses because she does not argue that her down-ballot focus justifies not campaigning with Talarico.
Crockett defends her decision to focus on down-ballot candidates rather than join Talarico's campaign.
