Caroline HeldmanDemocratic strategist and Occidental College professor, appearing on CNN
Heldman says a billionaire is using the "Martha's Vineyard set" line to attack Obama and that the joke's purpose was to poke Trump.
“A billionaire talking about ... to attack Barack Obama. ... it's obviously getting under Trump's skin. That is the whole point; that Barack Obama wanted to poke him.”

Where this statement fits
Obama compares Trump's White House decor to a Cheesecake Factory; Trump and Bessent push back
Barack Obama compared Donald Trump's White House decor to a Cheesecake Factory opened by Saddam Hussein at two October 24, 2026, campaign rallies, in Cleveland and then Detroit. Both times the line followed a list of Trump's White House projects and came just before Obama said Trump was not focused on lowering prices. Trump answered at an October 26 rally in Mississippi, defending the renovations and saying Obama doesn't like successful companies. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent ate lunch at the restaurant that day, said the museum Obama built looks like Darth Vader's tomb and urged the "Martha's Vineyard set" to try it. The exchange prompted disagreement about whether Obama was criticizing ornate decor or expressing contempt for a popular restaurant and its customers. On CNN, Caroline Heldman interpreted the joke as an effort to needle Trump and criticized Bessent's response.

About this source
The broadcast transcript includes clips of Obama, Trump and Bessent and Caroline Heldman's interpretation of the joke. The Obama clip comes from his Detroit rally. The transcript ends that clip with "It's -- it's just gold. Literally." In the rally recording Obama says "It's just gold everywhere."
Before the quotation
After CNN airs clips of Obama, Trump and Bessent, host Elex Michaelson notes that Bessent is a billionaire and repeats his "Martha's Vineyard set" line.
After the quotation
Heldman says she would rather have Obama, with about a 55 percent approval rating, on the campaign trail than Trump, with about 32 percent, and praises Obama as an orator. Will O'Neill then calls the exchange a Twitter war in person.
How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
Relative to Obama's comparison, Heldman answers its critics: she points out that a billionaire is using the "Martha's Vineyard set" line to attack Obama and says the joke was meant to poke Trump. She praises Obama's campaigning but does not argue that the comparison itself was justified, so this challenges how the joke's critics characterize it rather than defending it.
