DHS rejects GAO's call for stronger ICE body-camera activation controls
A GAO report dated September 15 and publicly released October 14, 2026 recommends additional controls, such as automatic activation, to help ensure ICE personnel turn on body-worn cameras when the agency's policy requires it. In an August 28 letter responding to a draft of the report, DHS rejected that recommendation, citing the risk of false activations and of recording sensitive interactions. GAO maintains that additional controls are needed, especially for unplanned incidents that end in use of force. DHS agreed with the report's six other recommendations.
