Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life backs Hawley's bill to revoke the FDA's approval of mifepristone
Kristan HawkinsPresident of Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action, in a statement of support released through Senator Hawley's office
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action, said in a statement of support released through Senator Hawley's office that the Pro-Life Generation supports his bill to revoke the FDA's original approval of mifepristone. She said the law would save thousands of babies and women from pills that should never have been put on the market.
“Chemical Abortion is the number one method of abortion in the U.S., and it continues to be a cascading death sentence for preborn children and their mothers, and now even extending to the environment and endangered species. Students for Life has been at work for many years to address the no test, online distribution of Chemical Abortion Pills, which expose women to injury, infertility, and death, empowers abusers who force these pills on their victims, sometimes without their knowledge or consent. The Pro-Life Generation proudly supports Sen. Hawley’s ‘Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act’ that would revoke the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) original approval of Mifepristone. If passed, this law would save thousands of babies and women from these dangerous pills that should never have been put on the market. Health and safety standards and testing for things like environmental harms have been ignored or fast-tracked, by calling pregnancy a disease ‘cured’ by abortion. Students for Life Action is proud of Sen. Hawley’s leadership on this critical issue”

Where this statement fits
Should Congress ban the abortion pill, mifepristone, as Josh Hawley has proposed?
On March 11, 2026, Senator Josh Hawley introduced the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act, which would withdraw the Food and Drug Administration's approval of mifepristone for pregnancy termination, make distributing and labeling the drug for that purpose violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, and let women who say chemical abortion harmed them sue its manufacturers. Mifepristone has been approved in the United States since 2000 and is used in a large majority of American abortions. Hawley argues a national ban is the only remedy because the drug can be mailed into states whose own laws restrict abortion. The bill drew seven Republican cosponsors but has not moved out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. On September 16, 2026, Hawley unveiled a four-page "Declaration for Life" and began asking officeholders and candidates to sign it as a commitment to ban the drug. The dispute is over whether Congress should enact that ban.

How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
The reference point is Hawley's proposal that Congress ban mifepristone by withdrawing its federal approval. Hawkins said the Pro-Life Generation supports the bill and that the law would save thousands of babies and women from pills that should never have been put on the market. That is direct support for the ban, so we labeled it Defended or excused.
