Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico cannot allow mistreatment of its nationals after the Houston ICE shooting
Claudia SheinbaumPresident of Mexico
President Claudia Sheinbaum said at her morning news conference that Mexico cannot allow the mistreatment of its compatriots, that the measures taken so far had not produced the results Mexico wants, and that there had been another regrettable death of a Mexican national in the United States.
“We cannot allow the mistreatment of our brothers, of our fellow Mexicans. The measures taken so far have not had the results we are seeking. They respond to us, but even so there is another regrettable death of a fellow Mexican in the United States (Translated from Spanish. Original: No podemos permitir el maltrato a nuestros hermanos, a los connacionales. Las medidas tomadas hasta el momento no han tenido los resultados que buscamos. Nos contestan, pero de todas maneras hay otra lamentable muerte de un connacional en Estados Unidos)”

Where this statement fits
Was ICE justified in fatally shooting Lorenzo Salgado Araujo?
On July 7, 2026, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot Houston construction contractor Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an attempted vehicle stop. ICE said the officer fired in self-defense after Salgado Araujo tried to run over an officer with his van. Passengers said no officer was in the van’s path and that Salgado Araujo had stopped before the shot. A later Justice Department account described possible vehicle movement with an officer beside or partly inside the van but expressly reserved any final conclusion.

How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
The case asks whether ICE was justified in fatally shooting Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Sheinbaum said Mexico cannot allow the mistreatment of its nationals in the United States and called his death another regrettable death of a compatriot, after earlier measures had not brought the results Mexico wanted. In the same news conference, El Universal reported, she also said people held only for lacking immigration papers have no reason to be in detention centers or to face violence. That criticizes the treatment that led to his death rather than defending it, so we labeled it Condemned.

“On July 7, 2026, an ICE officer in Houston, Texas fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old construction worker and father of three, while he was driving a work crew to a job site. Witnesses have disputed DHS's account that Mr. Salgado Araujo used his vehicle as a weapon. ... These killings, combined with the whistleblower's account of corners cut on both vetting and training, make clear that officers hired during the surge did not receive adequate instruction in de-escalation, use-of-force standards, and vehicle-stop protocols before being sent into communities with the authority to use deadly force.”Read statement
