Marjorie Dannenfelser of SBA Pro-Life America backs Hawley's bill to withdraw FDA approval of mifepristone
Marjorie DannenfelserPresident of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America (SBA Pro-Life America), in a statement of support released through Senator Hawley's office
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, said the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would address what she called a severe public health crisis by withdrawing the FDA's approval of abortion drugs. She thanked Hawley and Harshbarger for understanding the gravity of the situation and for their work to find ways Congress can act.
“At least 1.1 million children will be aborted this year in America – more than before Roe v. Wade was reversed – if the FDA won't act to stop it. The number 1 factor making abortion America’s top cause of death is mail-order abortion drugs, a dangerous relic of the Covid and Biden era that inexplicably continues to this day. This makes it impossible for states to protect women and children, creating a severe public health crisis. The Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would address this head-on by withdrawing the politicized FDA approval of these dangerous abortion drugs. We are thankful to Senator Hawley and Congresswoman Harshbarger for understanding the gravity of this situation and for their work to find ways that Congress can step up to address it”

Where this statement fits
Should Congress ban the abortion pill, mifepristone, as Josh Hawley has proposed?
On March 11, 2026, Senator Josh Hawley introduced the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act, which would withdraw the Food and Drug Administration's approval of mifepristone for pregnancy termination, make distributing and labeling the drug for that purpose violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, and let women who say chemical abortion harmed them sue its manufacturers. Mifepristone has been approved in the United States since 2000 and is used in a large majority of American abortions. Hawley argues a national ban is the only remedy because the drug can be mailed into states whose own laws restrict abortion. The bill drew seven Republican cosponsors but has not moved out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. On September 16, 2026, Hawley unveiled a four-page "Declaration for Life" and began asking officeholders and candidates to sign it as a commitment to ban the drug. The dispute is over whether Congress should enact that ban.

How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
The reference point is Hawley's proposal that Congress ban mifepristone by withdrawing its federal approval. Dannenfelser said the bill would address what she called a severe public health crisis by withdrawing the FDA's approval of abortion drugs, and thanked Hawley and Harshbarger for their work to find ways Congress can act. That is direct support for the ban, so we labeled it Defended or excused.
