Goldberg says on CNN "we're at war whether or not he says he likes the word or not"

Jonah GoldbergCNN political commentator, on CNN's The Arena with Kasie Hunt

Asked by CNN's Kasie Hunt about Vance's explanation on Iran, Goldberg said, "we're at war whether or not he says he likes the word or not because we're doing a naval blockade of Iran and that is an act of war." He said "One of the games they play is they like to say it's not a war," and that "both are false because we're at war with Iran."

Responding to

Vice President JD Vance said he would not call the U.S. fight with Iran a war, saying there is no active shooting right now and that major combat operations lasted about six weeks.

“we're at war whether or not he says he likes the word or not because we're doing a naval blockade of Iran and that is an act of war. One of the games they play is they like to say it's not a war, the war is over in part because they want the narrative to go away and for people to talk about other things ... I don't know which narrative is more important to J.D. Vance, but both are false because we're at war with Iran.”

Where this statement fits

Is the U.S. fight with Iran a war, as Vice President Vance says it is not?

At a White House press briefing on September 3, 2026, Vice President JD Vance was asked whether the fighting with Iran would be over before the midterm elections. He said, "I wouldn't call it a war. Right now, there is no active shooting," and said major combat operations lasted about six weeks. The next day President Trump said he calls it "a military conflict because it's small potatoes for us." Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Ro Khanna, Rep. Thomas Massie and Democrat Amy McGrath, a former Marine pilot, criticized the description or Trump's defense of it. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the U.S. is "still in a conflict, for sure," and, as quoted by Al Arabiya English, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson called the fighting "an overt military aggression." The dispute is whether describing the fighting as not a war is an accurate and acceptable characterization.

About this source

CNN's rush transcript of CNN's The Arena with Kasie Hunt for September 3, 2026, aired at 4 p.m. ET. Hunt plays Vance's briefing answer and asks a panel about it. CNN captions Goldberg as a CNN political commentator. CNN marks the transcript as possibly not in its final form.

Before the quotation

Goldberg spoke on September 3, 2026, after CNN aired Vance's briefing answer. Host Kasie Hunt asked about Republican reaction to the planned midterm convention and added, "when you listen to J.D. Vance try to explain himself on Iran, it's hard to understand?"

After the quotation

Later in the segment, CNN contributor Lulu Garcia-Navarro said, "whether the administration likes it or not, we are at war, and it's a war we're not winning right now."

How this statement is classified

Condemned

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

The reference point is Vance's statement that he would not call the fighting a war. Goldberg gives a different description, "we're at war", and calls the not-a-war claim one of the "games they play" and "false". He rejects the statement as false rather than only offering a different label, so condemns fits better than challenges the characterization.
