Condemned

Paul Rieckhoff, an Army veteran who founded Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, called the attendance criteria "a freaking beauty contest" and said Hegseth was trying to "create an image that is in his likeness". He compared the optics to what North Korea does at the DMZ and said adversaries were celebrating them.

“This is a freaking beauty contest. But that's part of it for him. I mean when I say he's a liar, he's also a liar about what our troops look like, and he's projecting what he wants them to look like. When they did the UFC event at the White House, they had Medal of Honor recipients and first responders. They had no women. Like he is trying to manufacture and create an image that is in his likeness.”

Where this statement fits

Were the Pentagon's Fitness and Grooming Requirements for Hegseth's Speech Appropriate?

Ahead of a "State of the Force" address scheduled for September 30, 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emailed U.S. Army commanders asking them to nominate service members who meet the Army's waist-to-height ratio and fitness-test standards, along with "impeccable grooming and uniform standards (no exception)" and other performance criteria, for the chance to attend and join him for a workout, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The Pentagon declined to comment on the request when contacted by multiple outlets; the directive drew public criticism and mockery from several commentators.

Before the quotation

Wallace had read the Wall Street Journal's report that the Pentagon asked commanders to nominate troops for the September 30 address who meet waist-to-height requirements and exhibit impeccable grooming standards, and welcomed Rieckhoff back to the panel.

After the quotation

Rieckhoff separately compared the optics to what North Korea does at the DMZ to look stronger than it is, and said adversaries were celebrating the display while U.S. troops kept getting hurt in the Middle East. Retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling then said the Army uses height and weight standards rather than a waist-to-height ratio.

How this statement is classified

Condemned

The label describes this statement's response within the context above.

Why this label?

Rieckhoff calls the criteria "a freaking beauty contest" meant to project a preferred image of the troops, which condemns them. The closest competing label, “Challenged the characterization”, loses because he attacks the purpose and merits of the criteria rather than only their description.
