Responding to Commissioner Roderick Miles Jr.'s call to restore the 316 Election Day sites used in 2022, Commissioner Matt Krause, a Republican who voted for the list, asked at what number every voter would have the ability to vote, called the 2022 figure arbitrary, and said the elections administrator's cuts reflected registration and site-usage metrics rather than targeting poor residents.
“Well, maybe it's just metrics of people who are registered voters and activity at those polling sites where they're making those decisions. We can agree or disagree, but I think it's an unfair characterization to say he's cutting those because people are poor.”

Where this statement fits
Were Tarrant County's 2026 polling-site cuts an attempt to skew the election?
On September 1, 2026, Tarrant County commissioners voted 3–2 to approve 224 Election Day polling sites for the November election, down from 316 in the 2022 midterms. Heather Cox Richardson characterized the decision as election-rigging and cited access concerns. W. A. Wren accepted the counts but argued that her account omitted the county Republicans' savings and low-turnout rationale and countywide vote-center rules. The decision's motive and likely effects on access are disputed.

Before the quotation
Miles had said the list cut sites in poorer areas, that the reductions punished people for being poor, and that he wanted the 2022 total of 316 sites restored. Krause disputed that benchmark as arbitrary, asking at what number every voter would have the ability to vote.
After the quotation
Miles replied that he wanted as many sites as possible and that geography should not be a barrier to voting. The court approved the list 3-2 later that day.
How this statement is classified
The label describes this statement's response within the context above.
Why this label?
Krause disputes the 316-site benchmark and gives a usage-based rationale for the cuts, which defends the decision and goes beyond merely disputing how it is described.
