Evidence and limits
On March 12, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali rammed a fuel- and fireworks-laden truck into Temple Israel while children and staff were present and exchanged gunfire with security before dying by suicide. No congregants, children, or staff were killed. The FBI later assessed the incident as a Hezbollah-inspired terrorist attack purposefully targeting the Jewish community. Ghazali had lost two adult brothers, a niece, and a nephew in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon one week earlier. Israel said one brother was a Hezbollah commander; CBS reported sources saying both adult brothers were members of a Hezbollah rocket unit. El-Sayed first issued an unqualified condemnation on March 12 and followed it with a four-minute video on March 13 that introduced the family deaths and broader war as causal context.
