Jerry Falwell Sr. was an American Baptist pastor, televangelist and conservative political organizer. He founded Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and helped establish the Moral Majority. He lived from 1933 to 2007.
Falwell sought damages over an offensive Hustler parody that a jury found could not reasonably be understood as factual. Hustler invoked the First Amendment. In 1988, the Supreme Court reversed the emotional-distress award, with all participating justices agreeing in the judgment.
