Jacky Rosen
Role at the time: U.S. Senator from Nevada and bill cosponsor, quoted in Sen. Tammy Duckworth's August 6 press release and in her own Senate press release of August 14
Statement summary
In press releases announcing a Senate bill to restore Iran war casualty records, Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) said the Trump administration's decision "to reclassify and dishonor the deaths of our servicemembers" in the war is "disgraceful and beyond the pale." The bill, led by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), would require restoration of casualty records for Iran-related operations since February 28, 2026, according to Duckworth's release.
“The Trump Administration’s decision to reclassify and dishonor the deaths of our servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war in Iran is disgraceful and beyond the pale”
Press release on the Senator's official Senate website (published 2026-08-14 16:25 UTC); an Internet Archive copy from 2026-08-27 also contains the quotation. The same quotation was published on 2026-08-06 in Sen. Duckworth's release (second source), so the statement is dated to that earlier release. The release's non-quoted text (for example, that the bill would also bar the Secretary of Defense from manipulating casualty records) is the press office's wording, not part of the quotation.
Archived copy (opens in a new tab)Why we used this label
Rosen calls the decision to reclassify servicemembers' deaths "disgraceful and beyond the pale," an express criticism of how the Pentagon handled the count; her words address the July reclassification of servicemember deaths and predate the Washington Post's Sept. 18 report of additional deaths. The closest competing label is “Challenged the characterization”, because she disputes how the deaths were categorized. That loses because she goes past the label to denounce the decision itself.
