Response to this claim

An employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute has been diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown etiology, expanded testing of her material found no microorganisms connected to her professional activity, and a biosafety commission found no emergency situations in work with pathogenic microorganisms at the institute, Rospotrebnadzor said on October 4, 2026.

“Под строгим контролем Роспотребнадзора в регионе проводятся профилактические мероприятия в связи со случаем заболевания сотрудницы Иркутского противочумного института Сибири и Дальнего Востока пневмонией неустановленной этиологии. The governor's weekly digest on his official Telegram channel. Its third item repeats the diagnosis and the finding on microorganisms from Rospotrebnadzor's statement of the same day and adds that no visits for infectious diseases were registered among institute staff in the past 10 days and that all contacts have been identified, examined and placed under observation with daily laboratory tests. The item mentions neither plague nor a death.

Why we used this label

The reference point is the proposition that the illness of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute employee, reported to have died on October 1 or 2, 2026, was plague. The governor adopts Rospotrebnadzor's description of the illness as pneumonia of unknown etiology and does not mention plague, so we used Challenged the characterization. The closest competing label is Denied. It loses because the item does not say the illness was not plague. Explicitly stayed out is a weaker fit because he gives a diagnosis and a finding.
