Daniel Butierez
Role at the time: Republican candidate for U.S. House in Arizona's 7th district, in an emailed statement
Statement summary
Daniel Butierez, the Republican candidate for U.S. House in Arizona's 7th district, said in an emailed statement that he would vote for a war powers resolution directing the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran unless Congress has authorized those hostilities. He said Congress must take responsibility for decisions about war and that an open-ended war requires a debate and a vote by the American people's representatives.
“Iran's government poses serious threats, and we must protect Americans and our allies. But an open, ended war requires a debate and a vote by the representatives of the American people. I would press for diplomacy and a defined end to this conflict.”

Thank you for reaching out. My position is that Congress must take responsibility for decisions about war. I would demand a clear account of the mission, its legal basis, its costs, and the plan to bring our service members home. Yes, I would vote for a war powers resolution directing the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran unless Congress has authorized those hostilities. That vote would not prevent our forces from defending themselves or responding to an imminent attack. Iran's government poses serious threats, and we must protect Americans and our allies. But an open, ended war requires a debate and a vote by the representatives of the American people. I would press for diplomacy and a defined end to this conflict. Daniel Butierez

The case tracks support for continued U.S. military operations against Iran, including whether a candidate would vote for a war powers resolution to remove U.S. forces from hostilities. Butierez says he would vote for the resolution, but only "unless Congress has authorized those hostilities" — an express condition on his vote, not an unconditional position. We labeled it Mixed or Conditional.
