Reference point: El-Sayed's refusal to rank Israel and Iran as threats and his comparison of the dangers they pose. Defended or excused: Trent says El-Sayed has already put the question to rest and that ordinary voters were not worried about an Iranian attack, backing El-Sayed against MacCallum's criticism. Challenged the characterization is the closest competing label, because he faults the repeated questioning, but it loses because he also treats the answer as adequate.
