Adriano Espaillat
Role at the time: U.S. representative for New York's 13th district, in a post on X
Statement summary
Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who represents the area, said he was at the scene being briefed by the NYPD, that he was demanding that all body camera footage and evidence be preserved and a full investigation with full cooperation from the federal government, and that ICE is a rogue agency that must be reigned in.
“I am demanding all body camera footage and evidence be preserved, a full investigation with full cooperation from the federal government, and accountability. ICE is a rogue agency that must be reigned in.”
The congressman's own post on his official account.
Why we used this label
The reference point is whether the ICE officer was justified in shooting the man in the car. Espaillat calls ICE a rogue agency that must be reigned in in the same post that demands preservation of evidence and accountability for the shooting, which rejects the shooting as justified, so we labeled it Condemned. The closest competing label is Mixed or conditional, which would fit a call for an investigation alone; he states a conclusion about the agency.
