Flávio Bolsonaro thanks Trump for receiving his family in the U.S.

Flávio BolsonaroBrazilian senator and defeated presidential candidate, in a letter posted on his verified X account

Defended or excused

Flávio Bolsonaro says he brought his family to the United States because of what he calls the political use of Brazil's courts, and thanks Trump and the U.S. government for receiving them.

“Given the political weaponization of the justice system in Brazil, I brought my family to the United States, where we are safe. Once again, I thank President Trump and the American government for welcoming us and giving us the legal security we no longer have in Brazil. (Translated from Portuguese. Original: Diante da instrumentalização política da Justiça no Brasil, trouxe minha família para os Estados Unidos, onde estamos em segurança. Agradeço, mais uma vez, ao Presidente Trump e ao governo americano por nos acolherem e nos darem a segurança jurídica que não temos mais no Brasil.)”

Where this statement fits

Trump says he would approve U.S. entry for Flávio Bolsonaro

Trump says he would approve of Flávio Bolsonaro coming to the United States. Lula condemns his opponent's departure from Brazil, and Joaquin Castro objects to what he calls U.S. safe haven. Simón Levy welcomes Bolsonaro leading the opposition from the United States. Argentina later records his entry and a flight bound for Ecuador, after an earlier BBC report placed him in Florida. The disagreement concerns whether leaving Brazil and being welcomed by the United States are justified amid investigations and reported passport restrictions.

Before the quotation

Bolsonaro posted the letter on October 28, after landing in Miami. In it he calls the October 25 runoff an electoral fraud and accuses Brazil's Supreme Court of political persecution. Lula won the runoff by more than four million votes, and Bolsonaro's Liberal Party said on October 26 that it accepted the result. Gazeta do Povo reports that a first version of the letter presented him as Brazil's true president-elect; the version on his account calls him the leader of Brazil.

After the quotation

In the next paragraph he writes that he did not flee Brazil but left it for the country's sake. Later in the letter he says he will lead the opposition from the United States.
