Jim McGovern
Role at the time: U.S. representative from Massachusetts, in a post on X
Response to this claim
Vice President JD Vance said he would not call the U.S. fight with Iran a war, saying there is no active shooting right now and that major combat operations lasted about six weeks.
“Your administration just killed a 6-year-old boy and at least 4 other people at a family wedding in Iran. Sounds like war to me.”
McGovern's post on his X account, @RepMcGovern. It quotes a post by Aaron Rupar that shows CNN's Kaitlan Collins asking whether the war will be over by the midterm elections and Vance answering that he would not call it a war.
Why we used this label
The reference point is Vance's statement that he would not call the fighting a war. McGovern answers with a different description, "Sounds like war to me", and ties it to an incident he describes as the killing of people at a family wedding. He offers his own label rather than only denouncing Vance's wording, so challenges the characterization fits better than condemns.
