The case's fixed reference point is the Defense Department's public accounting of U.S. military deaths in the Iran war, published in the Defense Casualty Analysis System (18 deaths as of Sept. 18, 2026), set against the Washington Post's report, citing six officials, that internal data show at least 22 or 23. Relative to that accounting, Crow expresses the view that Hegseth is covering up deaths of servicemembers and contractors, which the label guide treats as an allegation that the public count is incomplete or misleading; the label rests on this post, which links the Post report, and not on his same-day bill release about the July recategorization.
